چکیده

arterial CO2 values. Ten white rabbits (mean weight, 2.00±0.2 [SD] kg) underwent tracheostomy under anesthesia with pentobarbital. The trachea was intubated with an endotracheal tube with a second lumen for sampling respiratory gas at the distal tip. Capuometrywas performed through the lumen (CO,d) and the proximal end of the endotracheal tube (CO p). The internal carotid artery was cannulated to sample blood for measuring arterial blood gases. The differences between C02d, C05p, and PaCO2 were measured. Only the relation between C05d and PaCO5 was good (r0.915). We concluded that capnometry can be used during HFOV to estimate PaCO2 provided that respiratory gas is sampled from the distal tip of the endotracheal tube. (Chest 1992; 101:1681-83)

Systematic review of determinants of mortality in high frequency oscillatory ventilation in acute respiratory distress syndrome

INTRODUCTION Mechanical ventilation has been shown to cause lung injury and to have a significant impact on mortality in acute respiratory distress syndrome. Theoretically, high frequency oscillatory ventilation seems an ideal lung protective ventilation mode. This review evaluates determinants of mortality during use of high frequency oscillatory ventilation. METHODS PubMed was searched for ...

The role of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation in paediatric intensive care

Mechanical ventilation during acute respiratory failure in children is associated with development of ventilator-induced lung injury. Experimental models of mechanical ventilation that limit phasic changes in lung volumes and prevent alveolar overdistension appear to be less damaging to the lung. High-frequency oscillatory ventilation, using very small tidal volumes and relatively high end-expi...

Specific compliance and gas exchange during high-frequency oscillatory ventilation.

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the use of specific compliance (static compliance/functional residual capacity) to adjust mean airway pressure, resulting in optimal gas exchange during high-frequency oscillatory ventilation in a surfactant-deficient newborn piglet. DESIGN Prospective controlled animal study. SETTING Laboratory. SUBJECTS Eight newborn piglets at 5 days of age. BACKGROUND High-fre...

Mechanical ventilation and acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome continues to be a high-mortality condition. The role of mechanical ventilation remains primarily a supportive modality. Recent research has elucidated the adverse impact of traditional ventilation strategies on development of the disease and, ultimately, mortality. The institution of low tidal volume ventilation has been the only intervention that has resulte...

High-frequency oscillatory ventilation as a rescue therapy for adult trauma patients.

BACKGROUND High-frequency oscillatory ventilation is an alternative ventilation mode that improves oxygenation in trauma patients in whom conventional ventilation strategies have been unsuccessful. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation on oxygenation, survival, and parameters predictive of survival in trauma patients. METHODS A retrospective case series ...
